If unwanted calls are coming from numbers you do not recognize, the iPhone can screen or silence unknown callers instead of requiring you to block each number individually.
Configure Unknown-Caller Handling
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Phone.
- Find the controls for unknown callers or call screening.
- Choose the available behavior that fits your needs.
Block a Specific Unknown Number
- Open Phone and tap Recents.
- Tap the information button beside the number.
- Tap Block Caller.
- Confirm.
Unknown Does Not Always Mean Spam
A doctor, school, delivery driver, contractor, or business may call from a number you have not saved. Aggressive screening can therefore make legitimate callers harder to reach.
Use Voicemail as a Filter
When appropriate, letting an unfamiliar call go to voicemail can provide context before you respond. Verify urgent claims independently rather than trusting a callback number supplied by a suspicious caller.
Spam Numbers Change Frequently
For repeated spam campaigns, carrier filtering and unknown-caller screening can be more effective than manually blocking every number.
Blocking Does Not Prove a Caller Is Gone
Phone numbers can be spoofed, reassigned, or changed. Blocking a displayed number prevents normal contact from that entry, but it does not stop a scammer who starts calling from different numbers. For persistent abuse or fraud, combine iPhone controls with your carrier’s spam tools and keep records if the calls may need to be reported.
Save Legitimate New Callers
If an unknown caller turns out to be someone you expect to hear from again, save the number to Contacts. That makes future calls easier to distinguish from screened or silenced unknown callers.
