A carrier-unlocked iPhone can generally be activated with a compatible SIM or eSIM from a different carrier. You can check the carrier-lock status directly in Settings.
Check the Carrier Lock Status
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Find Carrier Lock.
- Read the status. If it says No SIM restrictions, the iPhone is carrier unlocked.
If the iPhone Is Still Locked
Only the current carrier can authorize a carrier unlock. Apple cannot unlock an iPhone from a carrier. Contact the carrier and ask about its eligibility requirements, which can depend on the account, financing status, service history, and local rules.
Carrier Lock Is Not the Same as Activation Lock
Carrier Lock controls whether the iPhone can use another wireless carrier. Activation Lock is an Apple security feature tied to Find My and the owner’s Apple Account. A phone can be carrier unlocked and still be protected by Activation Lock.
Carrier Lock Is Also Different From the Screen Passcode
If you cannot get past the Lock Screen because you forgot the passcode, a carrier unlock will not help. Use Apple’s supported passcode-recovery process instead.
Test With Another Carrier Only After Checking Settings
You may see older advice that recommends inserting a SIM from another carrier as the primary test. That can work, but the Carrier Lock entry in Settings is usually the cleaner first check. A failed activation with another carrier does not automatically prove the phone is locked because the SIM, eSIM, account, coverage, or device compatibility can also be responsible.
Used iPhone Buying Tip
If you are checking a used iPhone before buying it, carrier-unlocked status is only one part of the inspection. Also make sure the seller has removed Activation Lock and that the phone is not still tied to an account you cannot access.
