You can check identifying information on the iPhone and compare it with Apple’s coverage and device information. No single visual test can prove that every component is original, especially on a repaired phone.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Find the model name, serial number, and IMEI. Make sure the information looks consistent with the device you were sold.
- Use Apple’s coverage-check service with the serial number. A valid result should identify an Apple device that matches what you have.
- In Settings > General > About, look for Parts and Service History if it appears. This can show information about certain replaced components.
A valid serial number does not guarantee that a used phone has never been altered, because identifying numbers can be copied. For a high-value used purchase, also check Activation Lock status during setup, battery condition, cameras, Face ID or Touch ID, cellular service, and the device’s physical condition.
