Before trading in an iPhone, move the data you want to keep and then erase the device through Settings. Do not manually delete synced photos, contacts, or other iCloud data one item at a time, because those deletions can sync to your other devices.
- Back up the iPhone or transfer your data to the replacement phone.
- If an Apple Watch is paired, unpair it before giving up the iPhone.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings and follow the prompts, including any eSIM choice that appears.
- Remove the physical SIM, if the phone uses one, and confirm the iPhone returns to the Hello setup screen.
Erasing this way removes your personal data and disables Find My/Activation Lock as part of the authenticated process. If you are using a carrier or retailer trade-in program, also follow its shipping and account instructions.
