AirPods Max can pair with an iPhone through Apple’s setup animation or through Bluetooth settings. Make sure the iPhone is updated and Bluetooth is turned on before you begin.
Connect AirPods Max Automatically
- Go to the iPhone Home Screen.
- Take AirPods Max out of the Smart Case.
- Hold them near the iPhone.
- Wait for the setup animation to appear.
- Tap Connect.
- Follow the remaining onscreen setup prompts.
Pair AirPods Max Manually
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Press and hold the noise control button on AirPods Max until the status light flashes white.
- Tap AirPods Max when they appear under available Bluetooth devices.
If AirPods Max Do Not Appear
Charge the headphones, move them close to the iPhone, and try pairing mode again. If they are already associated with another nearby device, disconnecting from that device can also help with troubleshooting.
Apple Account Integration
When you pair supported AirPods while signed in to your Apple Account, they can work with other compatible Apple devices associated with that account. The exact automatic-switching behavior depends on your devices, software, and settings.
Check the Audio Output
If AirPods Max show as connected but sound still comes from the iPhone, open the audio output controls and select AirPods Max. A Bluetooth connection can exist even when another available speaker is currently selected for playback.
Automatic Head Detection
AirPods Max can respond when you put them on or remove them. If playback behavior seems unexpected, review the AirPods Max settings after pairing rather than repeatedly deleting and re-pairing the headphones.
