How to Disable Conversation Threads in the Mail App on an iPhone 7

It’s become increasingly common for mail apps to group messages from a conversation into one entry in your inbox. In theory it makes it easier to keep track of the conversation, but you might not like it, or you may find that you are missing parts of the conversation, or becoming confused about its chronology.

Fortunately most of these apps that have conversation threading also provide you with the means to disable it. This includes the default Mail app on your iPhone. Our tutorial below will show you where to find the setting that is causing this grouping by conversation to occur so that you can turn it off and return to simply viewing each message on its own.

How to Stop Grouping Conversations in the iPhone 7 Mail App

The steps in this guide were performed on an iPhone 7 Plus in iOS 12.2. By completing these steps you are going to be changing a setting in your Mail app so that conversations are no longer grouped together. Note that this will not affect your email display in other locations where you access this account.

Step 1: Open the Settings app.

open settings

Step 2: Scroll down and choose the Mail option.

open the mail menu

Step 3: Scroll down and tap the button to the right of Organize By Thread to turn it off.
