A song can be turned into an iPhone ringtone, but it must be an audio file you are allowed to use. Songs protected by streaming services such as an Apple Music subscription generally cannot be converted directly into ringtones.
- Make sure the audio file is available on the iPhone or in a location GarageBand can access.
- Open GarageBand and create a new audio project.
- Use the Tracks view and Loop Browser to import the audio file.
- Trim the section you want to use so it fits within the ringtone length allowed by GarageBand.
- Return to My Songs, touch and hold the project, then choose Share > Ringtone.
- Name the ringtone, export it, and choose whether to use it as the standard ringtone, text tone, or for a contact.
If GarageBand says the song cannot be imported, the source is often protected or is not stored as a usable local audio file. Purchasing a ringtone from Apple’s Tone Store is the simpler alternative when available.
