You can leave some group conversations in Messages, but the option depends on the people in the conversation and the messaging service being used.
Leave a Supported Group Conversation
- Open Messages.
- Open the group conversation.
- Tap the group name or participant icons at the top.
- Scroll through the conversation details.
- Tap Leave this Conversation.
- Confirm if prompted.
If Leave This Conversation Is Unavailable
The conversation may not meet the requirements for leaving. For example, the participant count or the mix of messaging services can affect whether the option appears.
Mute the Conversation Instead
If you cannot leave, use Hide Alerts to stop notifications from that conversation while keeping it in Messages. This is often the best alternative for an SMS/MMS group you cannot exit.
Leaving Does Not Erase the Old Messages
Your existing conversation history can remain on the iPhone after you leave. Delete the conversation separately only if you no longer want that history on the device.
Consider What Happens to Future Messages
Once you leave a supported conversation, you stop participating in future messages from that thread. If the group is used for school, work, travel, or family coordination, make sure you truly want to leave rather than simply silence notifications. Muting is reversible and often less disruptive.
You May Need a New Group Thread Later
If you leave and later need to participate again, another participant may need to add you back or start a new supported conversation. Leaving is not the same as temporarily hiding the thread.
