How to Recover Deleted Messages on iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

April 3, 2025 By Steven

Messages deleted recently can often be recovered from the Recently Deleted section in Messages. The recovery window is limited, so check there before considering more disruptive restore options.

Recover Recently Deleted Messages

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Open the Filters or Edit menu that provides access to Recently Deleted.
  3. Tap Recently Deleted.
  4. Select the conversations or messages you want to restore.
  5. Tap Recover.
  6. Confirm the recovery.

How Long Are Deleted Messages Recoverable?

Messages remain in Recently Deleted only for a limited period before permanent deletion. The screen shows the remaining recovery information for eligible items.

If the Message Is Not There

A much older deletion may no longer be recoverable from Messages. Restoring an entire iPhone backup can replace current device data and is not a sensible first step for one missing text unless you understand exactly what the backup contains and what current information could be lost.

Messages in iCloud

If Messages is synchronized through iCloud, deletion behavior can propagate across devices. Do not assume another synchronized Apple device will preserve a message that you intentionally deleted.

Preserve Important Information

For messages you need for records, consider saving the relevant information outside the conversation rather than relying indefinitely on the Recently Deleted window.

Recovery Is Not a Backup Strategy

Recently Deleted is a temporary safety net, not a permanent archive. Important photos, notes, and messages should be protected through appropriate backups, synchronization, exports, or other records. If the only copy of something matters, do not rely on the deletion-recovery window as your long-term storage plan.
