The iPhone Camera can recognize QR codes and offer the associated action, such as opening a website, joining a network, or displaying information.
Scan a QR Code With Camera
- Open Camera.
- Use the rear camera.
- Point the camera at the QR code.
- Keep the code inside the camera view without taking a picture.
- Wait for the link or action banner to appear.
- Tap the banner if you trust the destination.
Use Code Scanner
The iPhone also provides a Code Scanner control that can be added to Control Center. This is useful if you scan QR codes frequently.
If the QR Code Will Not Scan
Improve the lighting, clean the camera lens, move slightly closer or farther away, and make sure the entire code is visible. Damaged, extremely small, or low-contrast codes can be difficult to recognize.
Check Before Opening Links
A QR code can lead to a malicious website just like a link in an email or text. Read the destination preview when possible and do not enter passwords, payment information, or verification codes on a page you do not trust.
You Usually Do Not Need a QR Scanner App
For ordinary QR codes, the built-in Camera and Code Scanner are sufficient. Installing an unknown scanner app solely for basic QR recognition is generally unnecessary.
Be Extra Careful With Payment and Login Codes
QR codes placed on parking meters, restaurant tables, signs, and public kiosks can be covered by fraudulent stickers. If a code opens a payment or login page, inspect the domain and context carefully before entering information. When in doubt, navigate to the organization’s official app or website yourself.
