How to Send a Voice Message on iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

April 25, 2025 By Steven

Sending a voice message on an iPhone is a quick and easy way to communicate without typing. Open the Messages app, select a contact, press and hold the microphone icon in the text input area, and start recording. Release the icon to stop recording, then tap the send button to deliver your voice message. It’s that simple! Now let’s dive into a step-by-step guide to make sure you’ve got it all covered.

This section will guide you through the process of sending a voice message using your iPhone. Follow these simple steps to get started.

Steps

  1. Open the Messages App. First, locate the Messages app on your iPhone’s home screen and tap to open it. The Messages app, commonly a green icon, is where you’ll manage your text and voice conversations. It’s your hub for staying connected with friends and family
  2. Select a Contact. Next, choose the contact you want to send a voice message to. Tap on an existing conversation or start a new one. If starting fresh, tap the pencil icon to create a new message, then enter the recipient’s name or number
  3. Press and Hold the Microphone Icon. In the text input area, press and hold the small microphone icon. Holding down the microphone icon starts your recording. Keep it pressed until you’ve said everything you want in your message
  4. Record Your Message. While holding the icon, speak your message clearly. The iPhone will capture your voice as long as you hold the icon. Speak naturally, as if talking directly to the person
  5. Release to Stop Recording. Let go of the microphone icon to stop recording. Once you release the button, the iPhone stops recording and presents you with the option to send or cancel the message
  6. Tap Send. Finally, tap the send button (it looks like an arrow) to deliver your voice message. After tapping send, your voice message will travel through the digital waves to your chosen contact, ready for them to hear. After following these steps, the recipient will receive your voice message almost instantly, provided they have a stable connection. They can listen to it right away or save it for later playback

Yes, after recording, tap the play button to listen before sending.

iPhones typically allow voice messages up to two minutes long.
