Seeing SOS in the iPhone status bar usually means your iPhone is not connected to your normal cellular network, although emergency calling may still be available. It is not a mode that you normally switch off with a single setting.
- Move to an area where your carrier normally has coverage and wait briefly for the signal to return.
- Open Settings and make sure Airplane Mode is off. If it is already off, turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart your iPhone if the status still shows SOS.
- Check Settings > Cellular and confirm that your cellular line is enabled.
- Install any available carrier-settings or iOS update, and check with your carrier for an outage or account problem if service does not return.
SOS in the status bar is not the Emergency SOS shortcut
The SOS indicator describes cellular connectivity. Emergency SOS is a separate safety feature for quickly contacting emergency services. Its shortcut options are managed under Settings > Emergency SOS.
When to contact your carrier
If other phones on the same carrier have service but your iPhone remains on SOS after a restart and network checks, the carrier can verify your line, eSIM, account status, and local network conditions.
