The easiest way to move to a new iPhone is usually Quick Start. It uses your current iPhone to begin setup and can transfer data directly or help restore from iCloud.
Transfer With Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old iPhone.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the old iPhone.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt on the old iPhone.
- Use the old iPhone to scan the animation on the new iPhone.
- Enter the old iPhone’s passcode on the new device when requested.
- Set up Face ID or Touch ID.
- Choose how you want to transfer your apps and data.
- Keep both devices near each other and connected to power until the transfer finishes.
Direct Transfer or iCloud?
A direct device-to-device transfer keeps both iPhones busy until the process completes. An iCloud-based setup can make the new iPhone usable sooner while apps and data continue downloading. Choose the method that best fits your available time and internet connection.
Before Erasing the Old iPhone
Verify that your photos, messages, apps, authentication tools, cellular service, and other important information are working on the new phone. Do not trade in or erase the old device until you are confident the migration is complete.
eSIM and Apple Watch
Cellular and Apple Watch transfer can require additional prompts. Complete those steps before disposing of the old iPhone so you still have access to both devices if the carrier or watch asks for confirmation.
Plan for Accounts That Need Extra Attention
Not every app can transfer its signed-in state. Banking apps, authenticator apps, work accounts, and some secure messaging services may require you to sign in again or approve the new device. Before wiping the old iPhone, open the apps you depend on most and confirm that you can still receive verification codes and access any recovery information you may need.
