How to Turn on Private Browsing on iPhone: A Step-by-Step Guide

June 4, 2025 By Steven

Private Browsing in Safari reduces the browsing information Safari saves after you close private tabs. It does not make you anonymous to websites, your internet provider, your employer or school network, or services you sign in to.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Tap the Tabs button.
  3. Open the tab-group or browsing-mode selector.
  4. Choose Private.
  5. Tap Done or open a new private tab and browse normally.

How to tell when Private Browsing is active

Safari changes the browsing interface to indicate the Private tab group. If the Private option is unavailable, Screen Time or device-management restrictions may be limiting it.

What Private Browsing does not hide

Private Browsing primarily limits local Safari history and related browsing data. Websites can still identify activity through accounts, network information, and other techniques.

If your screen looks different

The labels on your screen can vary slightly with the iOS version, region, carrier, or app version. If a menu name is different, use the search field in Settings or update the relevant app before assuming the feature has been removed. After making the change, return to the app or feature and test it so you can confirm that the result matches what you intended.
