App Store apps can update automatically, but you can also check for updates manually when you want a new feature or are troubleshooting an app.
Update Apps Manually
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account photo or profile button.
- Scroll to the available app updates.
- Tap Update beside one app, or use Update All when available.
- Wait for the downloads and installations to finish.
Enable Automatic App Updates
- Open Settings.
- Open the App Store settings.
- Enable App Updates under automatic downloads if you want updates installed automatically.
If an App Will Not Update
Check the internet connection, available iPhone storage, Apple Account status, and whether the app requires a newer iOS version. Restarting the iPhone can also resolve a temporary App Store problem.
Update iOS Separately
Updating apps does not update the iPhone operating system. iOS updates are handled in Settings > General > Software Update.
Old or Removed Apps
An app that has been abandoned or removed from the App Store may not receive a current update. If it no longer works safely or reliably, look for a maintained alternative rather than repeatedly reinstalling an obsolete app.

Most people should keep apps current for security and compatibility, but work, medical, accessibility, or specialized apps can occasionally change workflows after an update. If an app is mission-critical, review its release notes or organizational guidance before a major change, while still avoiding long-term use of known vulnerable versions.
Restart an App After Updating
If an app was open during its update and behaves strangely afterward, close and reopen it. A restart can also help if several newly updated apps act unusually at once.
