Your iPhone has a lot of different options that let you customize the way it looks. These can vary from things like your wallpaper, to assigning pictures to your contacts.
But if you’ve gone through the trouble of adding pictures to your contacts, you may be disappointed to see that those pictures aren’t showing next to text messages conversations. This is happening because there is an option on the Messages menu that you need to enable in order for those contact photos to appear.

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 7 in iOS 12.2. Note that if you haven’t assigned a contact photo to someone, there will simply be a gray circle with the contact’s initials in the space where the photo would go.
Step 1: Open the Settings menu.
Step 2: Scroll down and select the Messages option.
Step 3: Tap the button to the right of Show Contact Photos.
